THE HOLY LAND
14-1/2” x 19-3/4. Original color. Excellent condition.
One of the most famous early depictions of the Holy Land, this map is based on Christian Sgrothen’s nine-sheet map of 1570. It shows the biblical kingdoms of Galilee, Samaria and Judea. Offshore is a large vignette of Jonah and the whale. There are two exceptional cartouches. The scale of miles is surrounded by strapwork, with an inset mask. At upper right is a strapwork title cartouche, surmounted by three medallions that contain scenes from the life and death of Christ: the nativity, the crucifixion, and he resurrection.
