PTOLEMAIC MAP OF SWITZERLAND AND THE DALMATIAN COAST
[Untitled map of Switzerland, Austria and the Dalmatian Coast]. From the 1541 Vienne edition of Ptolemy’s Geography.
Black and white woodcut, 11-5/8” x 18-1/8”. Minor marginal soiling, overall very good condition.
This is a reduction of the corresponding map in Waldseemuller’s 1513 Strassburg edition of the Geography. The map’s geography is taken from the work of the ancient Roman geographer, Claudius Ptolemy. It shows an arching strip of territory that runs from Switzerland east through Austria and Hungary then down the Adriatic coast to Corfu.
The 1513 edition is one of the most important atlases in the history of cartography. Among its other distinctions it was the first edition of Ptolemy to contain a suite of modern maps of the world. The reduced version was first published in Strassburg in 1522, with the maps possibly re-drawn by Lorensz Fries. The 1541 edition was the last woodcut edition of Ptolemy. The map is unchanged from the previous edition of 1535, but on the reverse the text is headed “Europae Tabula.”
