GREEK BIBLE WITH THE MOXON MAP OF THE WORLD
Vetus Testamentum, Ex Verisione Ixx, Interpretum (Utrecht: Francois Halma, 1709)
Original stamped vellum binding. Excellent condition. Engraved title, four folding maps and a folding print.
Bos’s Greek Bible is noteworthy for its four important, folding maps, including John Moxon’s Totius Orbis Terrarum (Shirley 458). Measuring 210 x 330 mm, Shirley had not seen a copy of this world map, and cited it only on the word of a colleague in Portugal. The island of California is located at the extreme far right on the map, while the rest of the Americas is at the left. Eden (and the land of the Nord) are placed yb the Euphrates. There are also three folding maps of the Holy Land in the Bible (Laor 118, 1031 and a map of Terrae Canaan) and a plate entitled Tabernaculi Constractio et Vasa Sacra.
These maps are sometimes sold separately but are rarely found together in the book as issued.
